If you want to move seven people at once, a minivan is just about the best choice. These family-friendly vehicles are easy to drive, get decent fuel economy and are easy to fit in a garage or suburban parking lot.
Minivans are also good at transporting cargo, but their only drawback is that their car-based chassis' offer limited payload capacity. If you want a mid-size van that can handle more weight, Mercedes-Benz has the van for you in its Metris.
Slotting in below the well-known Sprinter, the Metris is a smaller vehicle with seating for seven in a minivan sized footprint that can handle up to 860 kg. That's a little more than the Dodge Grand Caravan's 700 kg. Meanwhile, the Metris cargo van (covered in a separate buyer's guide entry) can handle a little more, at 1,100 kg. That's because less of the van's payload goes to hauling around the passenger van's posher interior.
For 2019, the Mercedes-Benz Metris passenger van carries over unchanged.
Power is from a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 208 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It comes matched to a seven-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. There's no diesel option like there is in the Sprinter.
Heated front seats are optional. A luxury interior package brings a comfort suspension, overhead control panel, reading lamps and footwell lighting and chrome interior accents. A driving assistance group bundles a leather-trimmed steering wheel, heated and power-adjustable side mirrors, collision prevention assist, blind spot monitoring, rain-sensing wipers and lane keeping assist.
While the Metris is standard with seven seats, Benz will sell you one without the second and third rows of seats so that you can have an upfitter set up your van exactly how you want it. Another seating option is a second row that can be flipped to face backwards. Other check boxes are for an appearance package that brings a chrome grille, fog lights and illuminated exits.
Mercedes-Benz's fuel consumption estimates are 12.3/10.3 L/100 km (city/highway).
